The Mexican national team was crowned champion of the men’s soccer tournament organized during the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, after defeating Costa Rica, which won the silver medal.d
The match, played at the Estadio Nacional Las Delicias, in Santa Tecla, ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of the Mexicans, who were superior to the Ticos throughout the match.
Previously, in the match for the bronze medal, Honduras defeated the El Salvador team 2-1. El Salvador sought to close their participation in this tournament by leaving the bronze medal at home, but they ran into the determination of the Hondurans, who were seeking the same goal.
The scoring was opened by the Honduran Jonathan Núñez at minute 34, in a free-kick action in which he broke down the defense of the national team, closing the first half with that score.
El Salvador discounted at minute 48, led by Juan Sánchez; however, the Hondurans sealed the victory at minute 86, with a goal from Exon Arzú.
