On June 17, 2022, “Lightyear” was released in theaters, a movie that Toy Story lovers were looking forward to, especially those who are inclined to that character.

However, to the surprise of many and even the creators, the project was a resounding failure at the box office as it did not meet audience expectations.

Now, Disney Pixar has confessed to that mistake and even revealed what would have been the reason why the box office numbers were so low.

Pete Docter, current COO of Pixar and responsible for great hits such as “Up” or “Intensely” opened up on the subject in an interview for The Wrap.

The professional clarifies that at Pixar they love “Lightyear”, but they also accept that they were wrong with the public about the way they sold it.

“We’ve given a lot of thought to it because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise. I think probably what has gone wrong for us is that we asked too much of the public,” he said.

Docter added that it may have been the excess of science fiction that turned off audiences loyal to the earlier films. “When they hear Buzz, they say, great, where are Mr Potato, Woody and Rex? And then we drop them into this sci-fi movie and they’re like, ‘what?'”

Finally, the expert mentioned that there was a disconnect between what people wanted and expected with what was offered in the project.
